Error Code: Access violation at address 004c817a in module diva.ex.. Read of address 00000000

Hi There,

On trying conduct a point to poly anlysis I get this error when the apply function has been conducted there is a brief box which says - "dumping .txt file and then this error and the new layer is not created.

Can you advise please?

Thanks
Cath

Exactly the same error code

Exactly the same happens to me with exercise no 1, when I'm trying to perform the point to polygon analysis. Maybe smth. to do with my operating system being w7??
Thanks for any helpfull comments!

point in polygon error

This happens when you select presence/absence and you have many species (or other classes). The problem is that each species becomes a variable, and a .dbf file is can only legally hold 128 variables. So, instead, diva writes the results to a text file (with the name you gave to the output shp file, but with extension .txt).

You can open it with a text editor such as notepad or excel. You probably do not really want a shapefile anyway. Or do you?

But that error message should not be there, it will be gone in the next version of DIVA.

Add on to point-to-polygon problems

Yes, I am having the same trouble as mentioned by the person to whom you responded with this message, but I am able to continue entering info as if I am going to go through with Point to Polygon. However, after I enter all the information and click apply I get an error message saying "Access violation at address 0062F3BE in module 'diva.exe'. Read of address 00000000."

It will save it as a shapefile, but an incomplete one, I don't even get a text file with the .txt extension. Are there older versions of DIVA I can download in order to complete this task? I know there was the capability to do this not too long ago.

I've attempted moving over to ArcGIS and using Hawth's Tools but I am unfamiliar with those extensions.

Please help ASAP.

It happens the same to me

It happens the same to me when I try to do the tutorial on wild potatoes. What should I do?
Thanks!

Error_dumping text file

I started to do DIVA GIS --- Exercise 1 (Diva GIS tutorial on wild potatoes). In this exercise I get error (Access violation at address 004C816A in module 'diva.exe.' Read od address 00000000) when I click on Analysis/Point to Polygon. After pressing OK this error, the window Point to Polygon appears. When I define everything and then press Apply; again the error message appears - dumping text file and then I/O error 32. I am expecting .shp file as an output. Please kindly let me know how to proceed. Thank you in advance

temporary solution

It was exactly what I had today when I tutored ex.1. I suggest all of you to re-install ver.5.2 (or update to 5.4) to solve the problem (i.e. to use Analysis/point to polygon). This previous version actually do not have this error.
It might be a temporary solution.
Hope it would be fixed soon.

I'm experiencing the exact

I'm experiencing the exact same problem as everyone else, and so as you recommended, I have installed DIVA-GIS version 5.2. I am now attempting to do Exercise 1 again, and now when I try to import points to shapefile using the text file including the transformed coordinates, I get an error message saying 'Invalid File name', despite doing everything the same as before. No matter what I rename it in the 'Output File' field, or where I place it, the same message appears.

How can I get round this?
